The Exmoor Perambulation

For over 725 years now, the Exmoor Perambulation keeps its essence as a time-honored circular long distance walk and Exmoor’s longest one-day walking event. This is believed to be one of the most adventure-filled walks in the calendar of Exmoor.

Organised by Exmoor National Park Authority and Active Exmoor, the Exmoor Perambulation will be held on 19th June 2010.

By means of participating on the Exmoor Perambulation, walkers will experience to view breathtaking locations as they crossover 31 miles and access portions of the National Park that are conventionally closed to public. The recommended training for participants is worthy enough as the 31 mile walk opens the opportunity to view the Exmoor National Park.

Walkers are expected to report to Pinkery Outdoor Education Centre, located at the north of the road between Challacombe and Simonsbath, at 0700 hrs sharp for the briefing and administration. Starting at 0730 hrs, the course will go through the boundary of Exmoor Forest clockwise.

For the most part, the routes lie over open moorland. There will also be road walking. For the three water courses, there will be free water and squash available for participants on the checkpoints.

The course is normally finished by the majority during mid to late afternoon. Back at Pinkery, hot and cold drinks will be served to the participants, free if charge. If you think looking for toilet will be a problem to you, think again, for there will be toilet facilities that can be used at the checkpoint at Pickedstones Lane and at the Pinkery from start and upon return.

The instructions to the Perambulation joining will be handed to the walkers who have booked their places together with maps, full route descriptions, and some essential information.

Since its establishment several years ago by the Exmoor Youth Association, the event has been continually sustained by dedicated volunteers.

Active Exmoor and Exmoor National Park Authority remind entrants to the 2010 Perambulation that the event is a long distance walk and it therefore necessitates sufficient endurance in order to fully participate.  Prior training is advised for those who are not regular long distance walkers.
