February 2011 Newsletter if you are unable to view this newsletter please click here
Now firmly in to the New Year, lets hope that we can all look forward optimistically to a brighter 2011. With Spring just around the corner, we're already seeing the first signs of green shoots, as the bulbs start pocking through the frozen soil, reminding us that the Snowdrops at Snowdrop Valley will very soon be in full bloom. The Snowdrop Valley park and ride scheme will run from Saturday 5th February until Sunday 27th February, a great way of getting to see this carpet of Snowdrop, especially for those who might struggle with the steep hills on Exmoor. A perfect time of the year to get a little Exmoor air in your lungs and blow off those Winter Blue's, and as usual we'll be offering some tantalising deal's to attract you throughout February, along with a Exmoor Cream Tea by one of the log fires when you return. Birds and Boxes
Sherryl Woods is a keen bird-watcher and has very kindly written an article for our blog. Hedgehogs and Dormice can hibernate during this tough time though for various reasons they can be disturbed. A Wildlife Rescue Centre near to my home reported more than the usual baby hedgehogs handed in to their team of helpers taking care of the necessary feeding going forward to a release in early Spring. A permanent Hedgehog Box in the garden, a weatherproofed wooden box with an access hole and full of hay or straw, can provide a welcome winter home to at least one hog and you may be pleasantly surprised with a resident family in the garden who will keep down the slug etc population in return. Dormice are one of a very select band of true mammalian hibernators in Britain. For such a small animal it’s easier to conserve energy sleeping than spending time foraging tray.

Riding on Exmoor
Riding is one of the activities most associated with Exmoor. When asked to think of things that come from Exmoor, some people may even mention the famous Exmoor pony, the oldest of the native British ponies. Non-wild Exmoor ponies can be ridden on Exmoor today, and also take part in showing and jumping.
